The island has a climate of usually windy, sunny, and humid. This area is not part of any type of watershed because it is a separated area from the island of Oahu and the topography there is a mix of houses built for people to live next to the water, slight litter debris across the island, and overgrowth over all or most of the area that consists almost 90% of an invasive type of edible plant related to the star fruit. Mokauea island has an interesting history and a strong cultural significance. The island is home. to many native species and holds the title of being the last fishing village on Oahu, all other fishing villages were taken down because of modernization of Hawaii. The people that live on the island live a lifestyle of sustainability where they must grow their own food and conserve their own water, but if they need something they will go across to the main island and buy goods. Many restoration groups have been made and have visited the island over the years to clean up the mess that the government has made. In the 1970’s the government evicted people from their homes, many homes were burned to the ground, and the government arrested those who tried to return to the island. But due to public pressure the island was returned to the public and the government offered leases for fishermen and their families to live on the island. The purpose of the island today is to promote a lifestyle of sustainability, self-reliance, and to preserve the Hawaiian culture.
